Bold new approach to colour

Renowned Toronto artist Jane Hall has teamed up with Pittsburgh Paints to bring her signature style to a riew store on the Danforth, which takes clients on a home decor adventure like they've never before experienced.

The European-style showroom offers an exclusive home collection of artwork, custom painted and upholstered furniture, plus bedding, throws, cushions, area rugs and 225 colours of paint. Six room vignettes, based on Pittsburgh Paints collections: "Playful" "Tranquillity" "Simplicity", "Warmth", "Power", and "Elegance", each evoke a different mood with their inspired colour combinations. The store has created a buzz of excitement around the Danforth area since its doors were prematurely forced open by consumer interest in mid-April.

" Jane Hall has an innate sense of the use of colour as a significant contributor to the quality of our everyday lives. Pittsburgh Paints is proud to be associated with Jane Hall as the exclusive supplier of colour to her bold new venture on the Danforth," says Brad Rossetto, Manager PPG Architectural Finishes, Canada.

Hall and partner, Ian Levack, devised the concept based on Pittsburgh Paints' "The Voice of Colour" campaign. The pair narrowed 1,900 paint samples down to a collection of 225, as they felt when people are inundated with too much choice, they play it safe by sticking to neutrals.

"Colour and sound travel on waves, so they affect you subconsciously", says Hall. "When people move through the store, they go very slowly; they gush, they sigh and some even purr as they experience the different moods of each vignette".

Hall launched her career two decades ago with her vivid painted earrings, scarves and cosmetic bags, which she merchandised by colour groups. She was also licensed to create designs for fabrics and home furnishings and did package design for major companies such as Nestle and Laura Secord. Only when she started painting murals for the Second Cup chain was she inspired to do her own paintings, and what has become her signature painted furniture.

Levack creates and designs home furnishing products on a licensing basis. He designed the first Royal Doulton licensing program for home furnishings, created the 1909 Linen Co. licensing program for Sew-Rite and the 1909 area rug collection for Beaulieu of America. Levack's Monte International Inc. manages products based on artifacts of the Order of St. Benedict, some dating back to the 12th Century. Its first product line, a collection of area rugs, was released to overwhelming demand in the USA this past January. The rugs are sold at Jane Hall, "the Voice of Colour".

The store is one of only a handful of North American retailers carrying the whimsically imaginative Solo line of upscale furniture. Created by Toronto-area furniture craftsman Joe Salerno, these custom high-quality sofas and chairs, with their strong hues and trademark curving lines, are a perfect complement to Hall's fearless approach to colour.

The store's dramatic room vignettes were created by Zerick Garner, the third member of the team, who has worked for 35 years in eclectic areas of the design and decor world. Garner's experience includes lighting, stage and prop design for theatre, interior design for night clubs and private residential clients-everything from bed linens to crystal chandeliers, plus the defining components such as floral arrangements and custom architectural details.

Jane Hall, "the Voice of Colour" carries Pittsburgh Paints exclusively, but you won't find any paint cans on the floor. Customers order the paint, which is delivered to their homes. In-store consulting, home visits plus a contracting service are all part of the Jane Hall, "the Voice of Colour" experience.

Jane Hall, "the Voice of Colour" is located at 707 Pape Ave., at the southeast corner of Pape Ave. & Danforth Ave. For more information, call 416-462-2949.
